Biography
Variety said it was "more than a film, it's a little miracle.” The Toronto Sun called it "a masterpiece." John Pozer's debut feature, THE GROCER’S WIFE, which he wrote, directed, edited and produced was selected to the Cannes International Film Festival as opening film for the International Critic’s Week and went on to win France’s Prix Georges Sadoul Award for Best First Film in 1992. In Canada, John was awarded the inaugural Claude Jutra Award by the Academy of Cinema and Television for Best Direction of a First Feature Film.
John also executive produced and edited the independent feature, KISSED, which screened at Cannes in the Director’s Fortnight in 1997. The film garnered eight Genie nominations, was theatrically distributed internationally, and is noted as one of the most profitable Canadian films ever made.
Turning his hand to computer animation, he directed multiple episodes of BEAST WARS for Mainframe Entertainment reaching audiences in over 60 countries. He has also directed a slate of episodic television for the DISNEY CHANNEL, CTV, CBC, MTV, and CHUM/CITY. In 2002, he won a Leo Award for Best Director for his work on MTV’s SAUSAGE FACTORY.
Pozer began his career in the 1960's as a stage actor, touring in musical theatre productions such as “Camelot,” “The King and I,” “The Sound of Music,” and starring in the title roles of “Oliver” and “Peter Pan.” He went on to star as Jim Hawkins in “Treasure Island,” which opened the National Arts Theatre in Ottawa. In 1970, Pozer was presented with the E.V. Young Memorial Award for Most Promising Actor.
Born in Kamloops, British Columbia, Pozer studied filmmaking and creative writing at the University of British Columbia and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Theatre and Film. He received the UBC Film Society Award for his series of documentaries which profiled university life in the 1980's.
He went on to Concordia University in Montreal graduating with a Master’s of Fine Arts in Cinema Production. He continues to lecture and teach as a film educator.
